Thank you for your support on #GivingTuesday to help fly patients to life-saving treatment!
Meet Emily Z, a cheerful young girl who loves swimming, crafting, and dancing to country pop music. At the age of 7, her parents received the terrible news that Emily had an aggressive brain tumor. Emily needed to get specialized treatment from the Stanford University Children's Hospital in Palo Alto, CA—but her family lived in Reno, NV.
In the difficult months that followed, Emily's family thought their only choice was to drive more than 250 miles to the hospital, a journey that could sometimes take 10 hours with busy traffic and dangerous snowy conditions. They couldn't take a public flight because, with Emily's compromised immune system, catching even a common cold could be disastrous.
It was tough to travel so far back and forth with a sick child, and the exhaustion made it harder for Emily to fight the cancer. With the hours of missed work, bills started to pile up. As you can imagine, Emily and her parents were close to their breaking point.
Then, Emily's family found out about Angel Flight West and everything changed. The generous pilots at AFW volunteered to fly Emily and her parents to Palo Alto on a private plane. She flew seven times, becoming friends with the pilots. With AFW, Emily's journey went from twenty hours round-trip to less than three. She was able to spend more time healing at home in Reno. We're happy to report that she celebrated her 5-year anniversary of being cancer free this October. Emily's inspiring bravery and determination in her fight against the brain tumor earned her the nickname "Cancer Warrior Princess."
GreaterGood.org is partnering with Angel Flight West to continue providing these necessary flights and you can help. It's costly to organize more than 1,400 volunteer pilots making tens of thousands flights across the western US. Often planes are needed urgently with only a couple hours notice. The organizational work AFW does is like running a small airline, and your gift will help keep these planes in the air.
For patients like Emily, the flights are a fun break in the middle of all the chaos. She told us it felt like travelling like a rock star, on a private plane with no baggage check. For her parents, it alleviated so much worry during the scariest time in their lives.
"These pilots do all of this out of the goodness of their heart. To know that there are people out there who say 'You don't have to pay for any of this, let me take you to your doctor's appointment,' it's one less thing to stress about. It's beyond generous." - Jennifer Zimmerman, Emily's mom.
"The people who are helping us can't even fathom how much they're doing. When you're caught up in the world of cancer, even the littlest thing makes a world of difference, and Angel Flight is a major deal. It's priceless." - Ken Zimmerman, Emily's dad.
Give a gift to help reach our goal of providing 10 round-trip flights to patients like Emily.
GreaterGood.org partners with Angel Flights West to arrange free, non-emergency air transportation for children and adults with serious medical conditions and other compelling needs. AFW matches volunteer pilots with people in need, making sure they receive medical treatment and other vital care they struggle to access because of financial, medical, or geographic limitations. There is never a cost to patients, their families, or healthcare providers to fly with AFW.
